Oh My Goodness

I don't like to gamble, but when I saw this I got a growler anyway without trying a sample. I put it in the fridge. On Saturday I wanted to replace the entire 1970s vanity/sink in the laundry room, and I used this as an incentive. I got her dun. Then I started on my next project, High Road Scottish Style Ale.

I am in love with this. It's dark. I thought it might be red, and seems to be slight red tint, but it's very dark. It doesn't have a strong smell or taste. It tastes kind of like Killian's but with an unmistakable smokey flavor. It goes down smooth. The taste is not overwhelming. I'm loving this.

Bottle left over after GABF judging and wound up in my rewards box for my volunteer efforts. "Great American Resturants, High Road Scottish, 50B Scottish Style Ale". Pours a two finger tan caranel soda-like head over a blear browned-rust liquid. Smells woody and grassy dry with minimal buttery caramel.

Tastes cherry sour and buttery caramel. Smoke, if present is very mild. A bit grassy, which could be alcohol. Soured iron in a drying woody character. Minimal roast in the finish and some tannin. Interesting estes in the aftertaste of light fruits...almost bordering on tropical. Much drier than I was expecting for the style, but I guess still in guidelines. Decent beer, but not incredibly complex or delicate. Light body and some thickness in the mouth. Carbonation isn't particularly strong, it's just piercing in a way I don't care for.

Tasted from a growler on 05/01/07 from the Sterling, VA location.

Nice clear mahogany color with a nice beige head and decent carbonation but leaves no lace. All malt aroma ... a bit spicy with maybe a touch of smoked character; a bit funky too. Similar malt dominated flavors with balanced spicy malts, smoke, and sweetness. Medium bodied with a funky malt finish but smooth enough.

Nicer on tap at the brewpub; would get another growler again.

Per chalkboard at brewbub: 4.7% ABV.
