Slightly darker lager with a nice healthy froth.

The taste is hoppy with a hint of toffee coming through. Good round finish and crisp. Citrus seeping through. It is a tad bitter with a delightful sweetness in it.

You can clearly smell that caramel, citrus flavor of the hops. Somehow you smell that sweet darkness in it.

It feels soft, yet crisp and easy to drink. For me it is one of my favorite Icelandic beers and should be offered all year round.

Thanks to my friend James for bringing this back from a recent trip to Iceland.

Really attractive appearance. The crystal-clear, burnt umber liquid was topped by an inch tall, bubbly, light tan crown. The head faded to a thin, transparent film that was encircled by a frothy ring. A few drippy streaks of lacing trickled along the glass.

Rich, caramelized malts came through strong in the aroma. Sweet with notes of toffee. The malts had a very doughy and biscuity quality as well. Almost cookie-like. Hints of molasses were also apparent.

The flavor profile was crisper and snappier than the nose. Quite malty on the front end with biscuity malts dominating. Hint of caramel-like sweetness. Surprisingly potent hop notes came into play mid-palate. The hops were leafy and earthy. Zesty and a touch citrusy. The beer finished crisp and dry with lingering citrus rind-like hops notes. Clean and moderately bitter.

The liquid was creamy and smooth and contained a moderate carbonation. Fluffy and supple. Pillowy soft on the palate.

Holiday beers are typically either intensely spiced or overtly boozy, but this beer was neither. Jóla Kaldi is a tasty, malt forward Euro dark lager that could certainly be a year-round offering.

A - Dark amber with reddish hue. Little head after vigorous pour.

Sm - Surprisingly hoppy aroma. Tangarine and lemon with slight sweet caramel.

T - Nice and snappy bitterness with well balanced malt sweetness. Surprisingly light hop taste. Nice and well balanced. Dark fruit and rye bread.

M - Medium bodied with comfortable carbonation.

D - This is a very drinkable beer. Well balanced big taste, yet light and snappy. This should be a year-round session beer offering, not a christmas beer. A tasty surprise from the first Icelandic microbrewery.
