I'm in Quebec City on vacation and picked up a bunch of different beers I hadn't seen before at Le Monde des Bieres. This was one. After my third sip, I was in love, came to BA to look it up and was surprised to see it was listed as retired. Either the one I'm drinking is really old, or it's been unretired. I was looking forward to trying to find it in US, but sounds like that may be futile.

This beer pours beautifully, a great three finger head that lasts and when it does break it leaves nice lacing. It is golden in color with a slight haze.

The smell is muted for a tripel. While one can pick up the malts, yeasts and typical fruity smells of the style they are all subtle and not "big" or prominent. It is almost timid in aroma.

The tripel profile is more prominent on the taste, but it still seems a bit timid. The typical candi sweet of a tripel is missing. This detracts from the overall flavor. Yeasts, malts and fruits are present, but none jiump at the palate.

The feel is good. There is medium to high carbonation and just a hint of warmth from the alcohol, which clocks in at 9.5 abv

All in all a fair effort, but I wish those muted tones would have come through more and they would have used more candi. A decent effort, but not worth a revisit.

Bottle: Poured a bright orangey color ale with a nice large foamy head with excellent retention and some lacing. Aroma of Belgian malt with some residual sugar and spicy yeast notes. Taste is a great mix between some spicy yeast notes with some residual sugar that is apparent offset by spicy yeast notes with light apricot ester. Body is about average for style with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Probably a bit against the grain on this one but I really enjoyed the complexity and the smooth drinking qualities in this beer.

SERVICE: Bottle

A:
Pours a hazy gold-straw color with a big, creamy white head that pours at three+ fingers and settles to one. Great retention; barely any lacing. (4)

S:
Doughy. Zesty and floral, baking spices, lemon zest, chamomile tea, pizza dough, clover. Really opens as it warms. (4)

T:
Sweet and slightly tart. Honey, lemon zest, sourdough, herbal flower flavors, rum, tea, tart white wine. (3.75)

M:
Medium bodied and pretty boozy with a prickly/carbonated palate and a lingering warm finish with lots of floral/alcohol aromatic feelings. (3.75)

O:
Tasty and interesting take on a Tripel. The beer pours nice and has a very big aroma. On opening it I just smelled dough but as it warms up it really gets a much bigger nose and ends up smelling really nice (even with taking it out 40 or so minutes early it needed warmed, FYI). The taste is probably its weakest point, but it still is a varied flavor and does taste good. But it is really sweet for my taste--mainly rough because it is just one kind of sweet. Feels good and is pretty hot booze-wise. Other than those nit-picky gripes, though, this is a solid beer. Would have again; worth trying (especially for Belgium style/La Chouape fans). (3.75)

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a goblet.

A: Pure gold in colour with a white head that dissipates after about a minute leaving a thin layer for the remainder of my drinking. Carbonation apparent in the bubbles that continuously rise up from the bottom of the glass.

S: Fruity/estery smells including banana, a little bit of phenol, a light bready/yeasty character, and alcohol.

T: Less phenolic than the smell but the other characteristics are pretty similar. The taste of alcohol is prominent. In addition I detect a little bit of menthol in the taste. The finish is sweet, and leaves a yeasty aftertaste with a small hint of caramel.

M: A fairly thin mouthfeel. Filmy at the finish.

O: A little bit underwhelming, but I'd be willing to try their other offerings.
