I enjoyed this beer on tap on 12/5/2011. I enjoyed it so much I went back on 12/9/2011 to have it again. A potent and pricey beer, but highly enjoyable.
A strong whiskey aroma was readily apparent from the tulip glass with only a moderate head. The beer had a dark color, though it was apparent that it was somewhat thin. Initial flavor was a smooth sweetness followed by a sour whiskey flavor in the aftertaste. Also following the initial taste were hints of vanilla and an oaky flavor. Perhaps my one disappointment in this beer is that I felt it should have been thicker for a beer of this flavor and character. The mouthfeel left something to be desired.
The regular Winter Warlock has strong hints of ginger and cinnamon. These flavors do not exist in the barrel aged version of the beer. While both are enjoyable, the two are only comparable in name.
