On cask at Los Gatos on 7/20/09.
A - Medium brown wth hazlenut and deep amber hues near the bottom and half a finger of bubbly light brown head that diminished into a patchy veil and left sticky brown lace around the glass.
S - Aroma is quite nutty and roasty with a bit of semi-sweet chocolate and a roasted coffee character. Slight earthy hop notes also emerged after a while.
T - Roasty and chocolate notes with some toasted nuttiness and prevalent coffee character. Lots of flavor for a brown ale with an earthy hop bite in the finish to boot. Drinks almost like a junior porter.
M - Medium bodied but very thin and watery overall, even for a cask pull. Texture is still pretty smooth. Moderate bitterness on the palate, especially for a brown ale.
D - Not a typical boring brown ale, which I must admit I was expecting. The cask conditioning really pulled out some nice flavors, even if it did thin out the body a bit.

Enjoyed at the brewery restaurant bar, this one is a dark black-brown color with some rose highlights and a one finger solid light brown frothy head with gobs of lacing in giant bands. The aroma is somewhat vague grass coffee and hints of citrus, but kind of weak. The taste brings tart bitter coffee bean, mild chocolate but not sweet. This is very smooth and silky with a dry tongue finish. Quite a nice quality feel with a dominant bitter theme. Sour milk malt and apple, pretty drinkable considering the tart theme here. Minor carbonation but it has a very nice effect in total. A solid cask offering and a unique brown ale.
