Smoked marzen, enjoyed on tap during SF Beerweek 2020.
This comes off as malty and crisp, but the smoke overwhelms and does not quit. Tasty but also somewhat intense.

On tap at the source.
A clear deep red with a thin off-white head with good retention and lacing this looks solid. The nose is soft and subtly smoky with smoldering wet leaves , mild oak smoke, Woody and mild toast with a nice smoke, smoky toast, all mellow and earthy. Mild bready, caramelized Munich malt notes. The palate opens with a blend of hops, earthy, leafy , mildly bitter along with a smoky , earthy, toast note. Strangely light in body, lighter than I was expecting. Mild caramel sweetness with a bready depth to it. Bitterness, softly and gently smoked, lingers on into the finish. Creamy carbonation, but the light body really detracts IMO.

A perfect amount of smoke introduced to a wonderfully toasty, bready, slightly caramelly sweet concoction. Remarkably smooth and well rounded with bold aromas and flavors of the above mentioned. A real delicious treat. As a huge fan of Schlenkerla's famous Maerzen, this one is a bit more approachable (for the potentially smoke-curious) and overall just a wonderfully made beer.
Cheers.
