On-draught @ Hair of the Dog Portland. $7 USD per 8oz.
Muddled char, wet cardboard, muted cherry, sludgy chocolate.
Bit of a boozy mess to be honest, lads.

Tap at the brewery.
L: Pure black, thin drifting mocha head, bubbles throughout, and legs.
S: Cherry, cocoa, oak, molasses, coffee, chicory, bark, licorice and aniseed.
T: Quite tart and sweet. Big black cherry profile. Some barrel but more of the fruit than the wood.
F: Medium heavy oily body, light alcohol burn, tingling carbonation.
O: Very good. A cherry lover’s dream.

Let me get this straight...
Sour Cherry,
Chocolate,
Rye Whiskey Barrel aged Stout,
from Hair of the Dog!?
Sold. SOLD, SOLD, SOLD!
Appearance, well... Nothing crazy. The deepest chestnut brown with an extremely thin tanned ring of tiny bubbles just hugging the glass. It's definitely pretty as the body is smooth, reflective, and silky looking.
The aroma is simple mind fucking. As "advertised" it smells tart, then chalked full of booze drenched cherries, hints of chocolate and a touch of char and sweet molasses.
Booze, plums, cherries, wood, fig, cinnamon, nutmeg, booze, blackberries, more wood. What the... Syrup, toast, grape jelly, chocolate. This thing is simply crazy.
In three seconds, this beer touches every possible sense. Tart, sweet, dry, slick, warm, bitter, tingly, boozy. This is a three ounce taster dammit, and it is rediculously difficult to refrain from chugging. Even at 12%! Spicy, sweet, smooth, and clean. What more would you want?
This is a very difficult beer to judge. As a sour or as a stout? Well, as a sour, it's tart, dry, clean, and flavorful. As a stout, it's bold, harsh, lingering, and unapologetic. Collectively, it blends the two styles perfectly. Seamlessly. So for that, another job well done for HotD.
Cheers.
