Well here is something different. A single hopped (Galena) barleywine? This might be a first for me. This beer appeared at the Single, Fresh, Wet & Wild Hop Harvest Festival in Chico, CA at Sierra Nevada.
Pours a darker, burnt amber color. Didn't hold much of a head, flared up to all of maybe 1/6" and played itself out. Can't really say the Galena hops did much of anything aroma wise, sure it was bitter hoppy, but there was more Maris going on than anything.
Taste was hot to me, I've always found that HotD beers that were double digit abv always tasted as much and this one is no different. Boozy heat, moderate bitterness, and not a ton in the way of hop flavor. The maltiness isn't too heavy or sticky, but it seems like the alcohol and bitterness cut right through it. It definitely helped get the party started at the festival where most of the beers are 4-6%.
