Had on tap at HotD. Review from notes.

A: Pours a very deep brown color with a small off-white head on top with great retention and lacing. The head maintained a nice foamy cap.

S: A little bit of earthy hops right away, slightly grassy which transitions to some caramel, roasted malt, and some smoke.

T: Tons of caramel with some burnt/heavily roasted malt. Slight citric fruit and a little bit of sweetness. Faint smoke flavor on the finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: A good effort for a second runnings. Had surprisingly a good bit going on. Not sure how many I would want though.

On tap at the brewery yesterday.

Dark brown with a dense, beige head with excellent retention and lacing. The nose is grainy, toasty, mildly smoky and has a touch of licorice. Not much hop character is present. Complex but not particularly compelling. The palate has the complexity of the nose, but the lightness and wateriness thanks to this being a second runnings beer is a little distracting. The English yeast adds some nice fruitiness and a little bit of a body, but not quite enough. Light in body, medium-high in carbonation, drying, smoky on the finish, this is solid stuff.

On tap @ the Hair of the Dog Brewery and Tasting Room (Portland, OR) on 9/3/11. Served in a tulip glass. While it wasn’t specified and just called “Little Dog” during our visit, I’m fairly certain that we received the Adam version.

Pours black, topped with a cap of off-white head. This maintains some thin foamy edges and dots the sides of the glass with light spotty lace. The aroma is grassy at first, before giving way to notes of burnt toast and more bitter smelling citric hops. I think a light touch of sweeter caramel is buried under there somewhere as well.

The taste has a lot of flat green citric bitterness going on with it, with a touch of malt sweetening up the edges a bit before a toasty and burnt character rounds out the backend. Lingering roast and rind stick to a tongue a bit in a relatively dry finish. The mouthfeel is lighter bodied, being smooth and creamy on top while still laying some sharpness down on the tongue as well. I guess this was pretty easy going and crisp enough on the palate to say it was fairly drinkable.

This wasn’t bad for a 2nd runnings beer but it could have ultimately used a little more flavors beside burnt roast and crisp bitter hops. I mean it drank OK but got fairly boring after a bit. It wasn’t bad though at cleansing the palate between tulips full of Fred from the Wood and Matt.

Thanks to Kan for sharing this one! Poured from 64oz growler into Narke tulip.

A - Pours a hazy reddish/brown, off-white head, some whisps on top of the beer, spotty lacing along the sides of the glass.

S - Nice roasted malts, good dose of smokey notes, slight hoppy bitterness in there as well. A good mix of smoke, malts, and hops. For a 3.5% beer, it's nice to see several things happening to keep you interested.

T - Light hoppy notes, citrus, nice malty sweetness, good smoke flavors in there as well. A good mix of bitterness and subtle smoke and sweetness. A fairly strong bitter finish, for what the beer is, more then anticipated.

M - Light, crisp, refreshing, clean finish.

D - Easy to pound, which is a great characteristic of this beer...haha. Nice to drink a couple of glasses and not feel guilty about drinking a 10% monster. Great for a session ale, give it a try!
