Stumbled upon this bottle while on a business trip to Samara, just north of the town where it is brewed. Ulyanovsk is known throughout Russia as the birthplace of Lenin (whose real family name was Ulyanov). Comes in a standard brown half-liter bottle with a colorful but uninspired label. The back label states "the best form of relaxation is a Russian sauna - together with a Vityaz beer." Now, Russian saunas are famous as places to drink a ton of beer, but I rather doubt I'd chose this one... Rice is an ingredient. Best before 2/15/04, I opened it on 12/7/03.
Pours a clear golden hue under a white one finger head with a bit of body. The nose is malty, but too sweet. The mouth is prickly and heavy, with a sickly sweet base. The opening taste is sour-sweet malt, chased by a touch of metallic hops. The aftertaste reminds of prunes and wet cardboard, with a very late harsh bitterness. Not good.
