Thanks to my coworker/friend Bill J. for bringing back a growler from Wisc. ... Tip of the hat Bill!

Poured into my SA glass, the garnet colored brew has a nice beige head, which, though not long lived, leaves some nice lacing.

The nose is very light and unassuming. I get some grainy aromas, probably from Munich and/or Pilsner malt in the grist. No hop presence in the nose.

The taste is that of a clean lager. Predominantly malty, there is a light roast and chocolate note in the background. Hops (Hallertau I believe) are just enough to balance the malt. I'd put the IBU level between 15-20. According to the website, the ABV is 6%, which is a bit high for the style according to BJCP guidelines, but its not noticeable in any way; no warmth or fusel notes.

Overall, this is a well crafted brew, which won a Silver medal at the GABF in Denver (2010). Its an easy drinker, and a good session brew. "Moosejaw Pizza and Beer" has a good companion for pizza. If you are ever up Wisc. way, its worth checking out.

Na Zdravje!

Pours a deep mahogany color with ruby highlights. Has a thick creamy, light-brown head that creams up very nice, leaving a lot of lace on the glass.

Smells of roasted malts, some caramel and hints of dark chocolate.

The flavor, not unlike the aroma, is full of rich roasted malt character with some nice nuttiness and some bitter chocolate in the finish. Not much hop presence other than the slight bitterness at the end.

A nice smooth lager, that goes down cool and refreshing.

Had a 6 beer sampler, and this was the only one I had a pint of afterwards.

Nice deep brown mahoghany tone, with a small amount of foam. Head didn't stick around too much. Mild toasted malt aroma, a little bit nutty.

Good malty character, bready and again nutty. Slight grain husk flavor, a mildly bitter roast suggests chocolate. Lingering bitter tang in the finish.

Carbonation was moderate and kept the lager from feeling watery. One pint was enough with lunch.

On-tap @ the Brewpub.

Deep mahogany color and a nice tan head of foam that leaves sheets of lacing behind it. Aroma of dark chocolate and toasted munich-style malts.
Light roasted malt flavor for bitterness and some rich chocolate in the flavor. Nutty aspect reminded me a lot of a rich nut brown ale. Medium-to-full bodied and quite smooth.

Says on the menu that this won a Silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival. I can see why.

Pour: dark ruby/garnet hue under a skim of milky cream.

Nose: milk chocolate, roasty/toasty malts and husky grain finish.

Taste: bitter roasted malt, espresso bean, sour lactose malt, light toasted finish with a kiss of citrus.

Feel: rich, smooth, a little grainy on the tongue with crisp carbonation.

Drinkability/Overall: A fairly drinkable, tasty, milky-sweet dunkel. Very German in its understated nature.

Dark brown...nice tan head...very lightly roasty nose...adequately flavored..roasted malt qualities evident..also some sweet milk chocolate...pretty big bodied for a dunkel..slightly yeasty sour finish..very decent..silver medal winnter at the GABF a few years back...nice flavor profile...pretty solid dunkel...

Somewhere in between a Munich dunkel and a Schwarzbier lies this ridiculously good lager.
Appearance is all Schwarz, with its near-black, cherrywood stain. An ashen brown head lurks on top.
Nose is lightly fragrant of burnt rye bread and caramel.
Taste follows suit with the burnt caramel, and drags along traces of liquorice on top of a hearty dark bread base. Roasted nuts are noted by the midsection. Tiny glimpses of java and char throughout. It has a well-lagered briskness. The hop closure is herbal and fleeting.
Medium bodied, steadied with slow carbonation and a general urge to drink gallons.
This is choice stuff.

This beer is pretty dark. Almost black. Big creamy brown head sits on top and sticks around for awhile. Laces very nicely also. Nice rings left on the glass. Pretty decent roasted malt aroma. This medium bodied brew is pretty tasty. Has a kind of a mellowness about it that I like. roasted malt. Nuts. Slight bread tones. All smoothed out with a nice lager yeast strain. I can understand whiy this one obtained a silver medal at this year's GABF. (This might be a slightly different style, but I preferred the Hefeford and Hops Schwarzbier to this one.)
