I recently had many vintages of Ric and John's barleywines both in oak and without. His base barleywine is a nice malty beer with a great hop presence and a lot of warming qualities. As it ages, the flavor mellows and becomes more winey. In the Jim Beam barrels, the bourbon, oak and vanilla notes are quite pronounced and also mellow with age. Don't miss these when they're on at the brewpub!

Pours a dark brown with little lace. Smell is of cheese and fruits which put me off at first. However the taste is of sweet fruity malts with a great hops presence to counteract the overwhelming malty alcohol presence. Little to no aftertaste whatsoever. Very drinkable, dangerously so. This is a great barleywine which for barleywine lovers should be one to try.
