Avondale Wine & Cheese

 

This was an intresting stop. It was a store down from Genes which made it easy for me to grab pics of both and stop in one trip. Really cool looking from the outside, the beer selection was ok, nothing really to write home about, but it is not really their specialty anyway. But they were friendly and what was there was reasonably priced. I had just been to CBX for the first time the night before so needless to say I was a little underwhelmed but I would still say it was decent and the only store I really saw in the area.

I was in West Ashley recently and decided to check out Avondale. It's a small place, geared a bit more towards wine, but there are still some good beers to be found.

They had quite a few Weyerbachers, Magic Hats and Ommegang (I picked up a bottle of Chocolate Indulgence Stout). They also had some of Unibroue's beers (La Fin du Monde comes to mind), as well as Mared Sous and Great Divide). A fairly high level of quality.

This place has a pretty decent selection, but it is a little disorganized (there are beers in a small fridge, beers in some baskets on the floor and beers on a shelf). Also keep in mind they only have beer in single bottles.

The girl working there was friendly, though I didn't really quiz her beyond "Where's your beer?"

The prices were fairly reasonable, but mainly with the small bottles. Most of those were in the $2-3 range. However, the 750 ml bottle of Ommegang I bought was $14. A typical markup.

Avondale isn't a bad little place. It had a few beers I hadn't seen anywhere else at a decent price. It's in need of a little organization and expansion, but it's still an OK place.
