Style: Irish red ale

Rating: 3.5
First had: on nitro tap at their brewery
A tasty red ale. Poured out a frothy reddish-brown. Smelled of roasty malts, which followed through in the taste. Mild and smooth, with an even smoother mouthfeel thanks to the nitro tap. Very pleasant and drinkable.

nice red color with off white suds
aroma is pungently citric, suggesting a sweet mandarine orange, just peeled. full caramel notes creep in and alcohol tingles the sinuses. hop profile could be more complex, but very nice
full and malty on the palate with citrus rind bitterness, good body and soft carbonation. finishes on dry toasty notes with juicy hops and slightly medicinal amarillo notes.
the mouthfeel and balance are great for the style, full and intense.
very drinkable and delicious. a wonderful smelling beer with good balance.

The nice thing about The Great Lost Bear in Portland is the ever-changing variety. You can find beers you didn't know existed, like this one. I didn't know there was such an animal as a red IPA. This was a beautiful beer, dark red, with a thick white head, and impressive lacing. It had a nice citrus aroma. Taste was a little disappointing. Sweet, but not hoppy. If I wasn't told it was an IPA, I wouldn't have guessed. Still, a pretty good beer, one to try.
