On tap at the Abbey. Served in a wine glass.
Appearance - Very dark inside, but its a deep reddish brown. One finger of khaki head. Retains a collar for quite a while.
Smell - Very fruity and boozy. Sugary component as well.
Taste - Strange. As expected, it's really sweet up front. Fruity sugars. Nothing very malty here, just sweet and fruity. Then alcohol and some other tangy flavor kicks in. Not what I expected.
Mouthfeel - Very boozy. Medium carbonation and a heavy sluggish drink.
Overall - Didn't finish this. Not an enjoyable quad.

At the brewpub.
Dark brown color with a thin thick caramel head.
Aroma with notes of molasses, prunes, a bit of homemade coffee and some red fruits.
Flavor with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, molasses, prunes, mint, grapefruit citrusy, herbal hops, grape jam, dark chocolate and candi sugar. Dry and bitter aftertaste.
Full body with appropriate carbonation. Slightly sticky. Alcohol of 10% is well disguised.
Pretty decent Quad, very fruity with better balance than others house siblings. Bordering the sweetness acceptance line. Their second better offering (first one is the Dubbel).

apparently a pretty polarizing beer here. i see some enormously negative reviews, and some that loved it. i guess i fall in the middle on this one, i dont like it as much as their other belgian styles they make, but its pretty solid, its just a lot different than the quads we are used to from belgium. not as heady and vibrantly bubbly as the others, and i think thats a bit of a knock against it. its also a little darker, with a not necessarily bigger, but more earthy and almost dark toasted grain flavor, not nearly as layered as the best examples of the style, and lacking some of that dried fruit nuance we usually see in good quads. its pretty straightforward, and it tastes like the same strain of yeast used in the dubbel, but its not as vivid here, and seems almost lacking there just a bit. the booze is also much more exposed here, hot on the swallow, and when it warms up, which it does quickly in the florida heat, it really gets burny. brewed for their 20th anniversary, i think its cool because its different, but its not as good as the other belgians they do. still quality, especially if you prefer the ambiguous belgian dark strong to the classic quad...

Draft of Brother Aaron's Quad served in a snifter at the brewpub where it is listed as "11-12%" ABV.
Slightly hazy dark mahogany with a durable tan head. Excellent lacing.
Aroma is fruity but unappealing due to a clear note of apple cider vinegar. Unfortunately, the taste follows. Wild yeast? (yes, according to staff).
Feel: medium-full body; medium carbonation.
O: Disappointing, but if you like wild yeast, you may feel differently.
