The beer pours a black color with a thin off-white head. The aroma is decent. It boasts of black and chocolate malts with a lighter feel than the porter. The taste is good. It is dark and a bit watery, but has real good flavor. It is again dominated by patent, roasted, and chocolate malts, but that's alright, because it works. It goes down smooth and finishes up dry. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium bodied beer with good carbonation. It drinks well; a fine black and tan. Like all their beers, this is a quality item.

Served as part of a sample tray at their brewpub. This beer was really like a lighter version of their coal porter. It is actually a mix of that and their Rock light. The color was a deep brown and had ruby highlights to it. A light bodied beer with a nice roastiness. Coffee, caramel and chocolate come through in the flavor, with an added buttery texture from the light beer. A light and drinkable B & T. Not bad.
