Sampled 1702, Tucson; February 2012
The beer arrives from the tap with a nicely browned head, that sits on top of a deep black colored beer that has some concentrated brown hues to it. The aroma has ample chocolate aromatics (mostly evocative of dark chocolate), sweet coffee liquor like aromatics, and some burnt prune notes as it warms up.

The flavor is quite bitter, with burnt, black malt up front, that couples with a solid carbonic bite, and lots of dark chocolate flavors. Underneath the sometimes too expressive carbonation is a rich body, that is quite a bit more noticeable after the excessive carbonation is shaken forcefully out. Roasted plum flavors mixes with the alcohol flavors towards the finish and there are other, more mellow fruit notes that get contributed as the beer warms up. A huge roasted flavor, coupled with an ample dark malt sweetness, makes me think of this beer as a huge stout more than a porter. Ample roasted coffee flavors, a burnt nuttiness, whole grain brown toasted flavors all contribute to the complex, dark malt profile that dominates this beer. The beer is actually somewhat hoppy, though this struggles to come through the rich, dark malt; mostly it is slightly herbal and somewhat bitter in its hop accent.

I probably like this a bit more than the mescal-oak version; this is a great base beer, and even though the mescal / oak added interesting character, I like the balance of this version a bit more.

Poured from cask at 1702 in Tucson.
Not 100% sure on the spelling or the abv...
Imperial porter aged in tequila barrels.

Poured a deep black abyss into a globe. Nice creamy head as you would expect from a cask pour. Lacing and a rim of tan head remains throughout the drink.
Smell of nicely roasted malts and booze...liquor.
Taste is of big roasted malts and some woody boozey sharp malts. This is nice.
It is just so smooth its insane...sounds weird but its like a room temp malted milkshake.
I can really taste the tequila in this and if I wake up face down bloody in a closet in NYC its confirmed its there...
