Review from notes taken last night. $4.75 on tap at the Brewery, bar in Kill Devil Hills. Poured into a 10 oz. tulip which is how it is served at the bar.

A Black, opaque body under a brief light brown head although it was not easy to assess it with the light at the bar. I am a sucker for beer served in a tulip (I love it) but this really did look attractive. 4.0

S Sweet malt goodness and very little hops. Just as I expected and hoped for! 4.5

T As the smell suggested, sweet malt and barely in a great quad like sweet syrupy goodness. The heat from the alcohol holds off until the aftertaste. This is a good tasting beer! 4.0

M A bit thin as compared to other beers of this style but it is still a "big" beer with the malt sweetness and ABV level. 4.0

D/O Fair due to the "bigness" of the beer and the sweetness which demands your attention but reduces its drinkability. Overall this is a very good beer, one that I would certainly purchase again. 4.5

Thanks to my dad for bringing me this growler from his vacation.

A: pours a brown, almost black into a DFH signature glass. Up to the light it has some nice ruby colors. For being half a week old growler beer I am amazed at the finger of khaki head that hangs for a while but leaves no lacing.

S: nice belgian candy sugar, raisins, dates, leather and figs.

T: brown sugar, slightly burnt brown sugar, dried dark fruits. Some citrus notes and very earthy, leathery.

MF: moderate carbonation, a bit viscous, smooth and a tas heavy.

O: I may be giving this beer a lot of credit but to survive almost a week in a growler and still be this awesome is saying something.

A: pours deep brown almost black in the glass. Basically no head, what was there was a immeasurable brown layer the barely lasted.
S: plum/prune, and a little banana, sweet malt reminds me more of a belgian style ale.
T: very nice sweet malt, a touch of yeast spiciness. Plum/prune as well as dark fruits, maybe a little bit of raisin, even some banana but not very much. Alcohol is lightly noticeable but doesn't burn. Hops has a very light bitterness in the aftertaste.
M: low carbonation. A little coating and lasting.
O: for a small brewery that I've never had but heard of I'm impressed. High abv is mostly hidden, flavors would make me put this more toward a belgian strong dark ale as opposed to American strong ale.

Had on tap at the brewery.

A: Pours a light brown with little head.

S: Banana, clove and sweet malt.

T: Sweet malt upfront followed by considerable banana. Nice alcohol heat but not boozy. Slight spicy pepper finish.

M: Medium body and just a touch cloying.

O: Glad to find a good beer in a big tourist area.
