"Violet Beauregarde." Reviewed from notes taken in Spring 2015.
Served from a cask (firkin) into a mason jar at Stanley's Farmhouse Pizza, Austin, TX. Cost was $6 per pint.
8.60% ABV. This is 512's pecan porter aged with cacao nibs and blueberries.
HEAD: None. No lacing.
BODY: Opaque brown-black colour. No yeast/lees or sediment are/is visible within.
An appealing appearance for a beer generally speaking, but it's a casualty of its cask dispensing - especially in terms of carbonation.
AROMA: Caramelized pecan, dark malt sweetness, specialty chocolate malts, faint blueberry, and, sure, cacao nibs - when I look for them.
Aromatic intensity is average. Pleasant, suggesting a balanced beer albeit possibly a reticent one. I find no overt yeasty notes, off-notes, or booze.
TASTE: Not too sweet. It's balanced but a bit muted in terms of flavour. The caramelized pecan is far more reticent than it is in regular Pecan Porter. The blueberry is similarly faint at best. The cacao nibs never really come through, but I do get some chocolate flavour from specialty chocolate malts.
Average depth of flavour. Average flavour duration and flavour intensity.
This is kind of a murky imbalanced mess, but it's not incohesive. Needs more complexity, subtlety, and depth of flavour to really compete with the best in the style. I'm inclined to blame the cask dispense serving method for the reticence of the beer; regular Pecan Porter is far more expressive when on-draught.
Not a gestalt harmonious whole of a beer.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, unrefreshing, medium-bodied, well-carbonated. Has a decent overall presence on the palate and complements the taste okay, but fails to elevate the beer as a whole or to accentuate specific flavours.
It's unfortunate this was served on cask, but it doesn't have the carbonation issues I feared.
OVERALL: Drinkable but disappointing given Pecan Porter is the 512 beer I usually go for and one of the main beers I associate with Texan craft brewing. The premise is great, the execution lackluster. I wouldn't get it again unless it was on-draught or in reasonably priced small format bottles/cans. Surprisingly, it's not as good as the base beer, and I find it below average for a beer in the porter style overall.
