Smooth and delicious. Perfectly balanced. Outstanding mouthfeel. They nailed it! This is my favorite style, and this is one of the best I’ve tasted. I’m rating this a wee bit higher than my hometown favorite, Backwoods Bastard. Great job, Flying Goose!

Poured into a thistle, the appearance was a rich dark brown close to black color with a fairly quickly dissipating cap of a little off white foamy head. Barely any lace.
The aroma captured a superb blend of sweet and smoky malts with a light spicy oak barrel twisting finely into a nice smooth caramel malt backbone. Nice earthy to burnt coffee beans lighter in the backbone. Moderate floral tipped character even further beneath.
The flavor was mostly leaning sweet with the woody barrel spice invigorating the space between the coffee, earthiness and a light dark chocolate. Aftertaste was the woody barrel spice up front with a light sweet and smokiness from the malts.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fine sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine, perhaps a touch above than expected for the style. Still, nothing truly interfered with the quality of how I felt this along my tongue. ABV felt close to being where the brewer projected this to be.
Overall, just when one thinks they've had the end all and be all of Scotch Ales/Wee Heavies having Backwoods Bastard. Ah, just wait til you have this one. Only thing to me was I perhaps could have sat on this just a tad longer, maybe the spice would have incorporated a bit more into the whole blend of it all.

"Brewed with Scottish floor-malted barley, European hops and yeast. Aged in smoked whiskey barrels. 9% ABV."
Pours dark brown with some carbonation bubbles. Aroma is of smoke but there is a sweetness to it as well as some whiskey. The feel is medium but actually pretty smooth. The flavors are of some caramel, toffee, smoked meat and the whiskey from the barreling. I'm rather blown away by this oaked wee heavy. Really enjoyable and well crafted. Cheers!
