Pouring a cold growler into a goblet. The beer pours a dark chocolate brown color with creamy tan head of 2 cm. The foam recedes to a sturdy edge layer and small wispy island.
The aroma is caramel and roasted malt with a good dose of chocolate too. Some grainy bread notes too. Hops and booze are both very hidden on the nose.
The first sip reveals a fairly thick body with fine tingly carbonation that gently rolls across my palate on each mouthful.
Flavor is what the nose promises with toffee and a bit of roasted notes with a lot of dark chocolate. Not sweet easter candy notes but a deeper more complex chocolate flavor.
The booze is well hidden and no hops show up here either.
Its a bit of a sipping beer based on it feels heavy in my belly, but the ABV is hidden making it easier to drink than an 8.3% doppelbock could be.
A well made doppel that i am glad to have sampled, definitely something I would order again when visiting the pub.

Poured into a tulip at the brewpub.
The appearance was a pure dark brown close to black color with an eggshell white foamy small cap of a little head. The head slid off fairly quick. Not much lace, barely anything.
The aroma had a bready/yeasty sweetness up front, reminiscent of that German earthy to grassy character I sometimes find in bock beers. Then the dark chocolate bittersweetness entered in practically perfect. The more I smelled the more I thought it was like drinking dark chocolate liquid bread.
The flavor pretty much mirrored the aroma spot on and had a magnificent aftertaste of dark chocolate earthy and dusty liquid bread.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fine sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt hidden enough, it didn't even feel anywhere close to what was projected. Super smooth lager-like finish.
Overall, an absolutely wonderful doppelbock! Why am I only having this now as I would have loved to have it earlier in the Spring!
