Backdraft is a rauch bier or smoked lager. Bamberg Germany is the home of rauch bier. The imported German malts used for brewing this beer have been smoked over a beechwood fire. Sutble smokiness makes for a very good complement to red meat, barbeque or any hearty fare. Backdraft is a singular creation of Head Brewer Cory Buenning.

On tap at the brewpub in an American pint glass.
Good lacing all around with a decent retention, bright and clear orange sunset color. Just enough smoke off the nose with a sweet malt back. Solid crispness with a slightly chewy medium body. Both a complex maltiness and smoke flavor spring on to the palate to start. Both malt and smoke go back a forth with toasted bread and charred beechwood flavors. Hop bitterness is modest though some herbal flavor appears in the end. Finishes with a slowly fading smokiness and more of the complex maltiness.
Wow, very authentic in flavor. It more or less puts less than fresh imported smoked beer to shame.
