Off the tap this one-year-old, American barleywine was a cloudy copper color. The head was one-finger thick, beige colored, retained well as a thin collar and left streaky lacing. The aroma was complex, lots of fruit, tropical elements, raisins, dates, mangos, candy sugar, butterscotch and light citrus notes. The flavors were totally on-point and reflected the depth of age. I tasted caramel malt at first, toffee and butterscotch, then oak, alcohol, some doughy malt, fruity esters and candy sugar at the very end. Dangerously drinkable and well balanced for the style. I was impressed. The mouthfeel was rich smooth, the body full and the carbonation light. A great example of the style and one of the best barleywines I'd had in an age.
