PBH STRONG Porter Ale
Old Coast Road Brewery

A - Pours a muddy dark brown in the body, with a retentive creamy eggshell head. Minimal lacing.

S - Roasted malts, coffee, blackberry and dark chocolate.

T - Follows the nose with roasted flavours of coffee and chocolate, but the dark berries make their presence known. Nice balance of bitterness and sweetness.

M - Medium to full body, light carbonation.

T - A surprisingly good porter, nice complexity of flavours and well balanced. Thumbs up.

Drank from my Stella tulip.

A - Pours a Very dark MAhogany colour with a two fingered tanned head that reduces to a film, no lacing.

S - Has quite a chocolate cocoa swmell, but also a rather unpleasant burnt rubber aroma. Hints of roasted malt also.

T - Up front there are some small roasted malts with achocolate aftertaste. The taste is not prominent enough and it is confused. The burnt rubber smell comes through in the flavour.

M - A little thin and medium carbonation

O - Not the best effort at a Porter.

Appearance - 3.5
Pours a finger of creamy beige head over a dark brown body.
Decent head retention but no lace.

Smell - 3.5
Chocolate syrup and caramel, a little coffee, roasted malt and dark fruit.

Taste - 4.0
Starts with lots of burnt tasting roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee and plum, noticeable alcohol and greater hop (quite minty) character than expected from an English porter, perhaps it is closer to the American interpretation. Bitterness is substantial, but there is enough sweetness for balance.

Mouthfeel - 4.0
Medium to full bodied with persistent, fine carbonation.

Drinkability - 3.5
At least for me, the bitterness is more than I like in a Porter which reduced drinkability. Very tasty though, I'll be drinking this again.

OVERALL - 3.75
This is actually the second time I have tried this beer, the first time was on-tap at the brewery when it was barely a month old. While I enjoyed the porter then, it was far too sweet and not something I would go back to. Now I am impressed - a punchy, robust porter that in my opinion is one of the better beers currently brewed in WA.

This beer pours a jet black colour which does not let any light in at all and only leaves a half finger head which disspates as fast as it appears with no lacing to be seen,it has aromas of sweet dark plums and some chocolate,sherry notes aswell,on tasting this beer it has some nice chocolate,coffee highlights but i mostly get dark plums covered in mocha with an average mouthfeel but the beer does finish quite smooth with a little moreish feel on the palette but definately not any more than the one bottle i have bought but in saying that could drink more than one of these just dont think its the best in its category and it isnt strong as the label suggests but i do like that the brewery puts alot of love into their labels for example they put a different pic of an old sailing boat on each of these porters with a write up about its history and their beer on the back so pats on the back for that.
