Had on tap in oberau Germany, which is just slightly higher in elevation from berchtesgaden. It pours a straw yellow color with tons of bubbles streaming up feeding the off white pillowy head. The cap is very sticky and laces the glass nicely as you drink.
The smell is very fresh, lightly toasted grains. Almost as if the brew day smell was captured in the bottle. A clean scent of lemons and a healthy pinch of hops round out this great smelling brew.
I'm stunned by the taste because this is one of the best pilseners I've ever had. The taste is balanced perfectly between crisp hop and light sweet grain. And it's not just a little touch of these flavors. They are big, bold and tasty. Slightly behind the big grain is a squeeze of hoppy lemon that adds just enough tart to the sweet. Excellent.
The mouthfeel is also fantastic, offering up a solid carbonation sizzle. Light on the tongue to the point of feeling very watery and satisfying with out tasting watered down. I really think there isn't a better pilsner out there. What a great find after just happening to stop by a small town for a quick bite.
