April 1st, 2015 - Breakwater Brewery's Rye-Dawn has a gorgeous cap of pearly foam, which pops up even in the stultifying environment of a taster glass, suggesting an extremely buoyant brew. Unfortunately, this layer of crowded spheres makes it harder to get a proper sniff in, but I do get little glimmers of milk chocolate here and there, when the beer decides it can surrender an aromatic hint. The palate is soft and spongy, with a delicate foam layering the way for the rest of the beer. And the flavor? Kelpy and otherwise plain. There's a touch of saltiness on it, but the taste seems a bit too restrained. Somewhere between a watered down brown and a porter and a milk stout, it has the character of none of these. In its blandness it might have a good place as a session brew, but otherwise lacks dimensionality.

This is the best American style brown that I've tasted.
