Brown 500ml bottle, packaged for the Co-Operative Supermarket chain. Poured into my new 'Good People' (Birmingham, Alabama) tumbler on 17 Feb 2011. The beer was BB 20 May 2011.

Lively looking brew, plenty of bubbles rising through the clear orange/light amber body towards the full tightly bubbled head of white. The produced some good lacing as the beer level sank.

Very little smell, if any. Slight hint of yeast when it began to warm, otherwise nothing I could find.

The taste was a weak mix of hops and malts, each trying to hide behind the other and not be noticed. Semi-sweet apple pie sort of flavours, strange. Had difficulty finding the alcohol within the brew too, everything was very 'understated' in all ways.

Can't say I was overly impressed and I'll not be having another one.

500 mL poured into a glass. Minimal off-white head that dissipates quickly. Sits on top of a golden-amber brew.

This organic ale is brewed by Freeminer, but packaged exclusively for the Co-op, a UK cornership chain. The packaging and name are almost identical to the one reviewed under Caledonian, but instead the Freeminer logo is present.

I first bought this as the 'organic' moniker caught my attention. This is a sweeter than your average English pale ale, but has a nice honey-like flavor. Something I noticed off the bat however, is a sugary (slightly unpleasant/artificial) sweet aftertaste. This made me check the ingredient listing--the presence of fair trade demerera sugar is detected. Although this is fully a bad thing (it's still a really nice-tasting ale), it might deter some purists. I'm wondering if the sugar is present because other organic ingredients were hard to come by? Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Mouthfeel is nice--other than the sugary-sweet aftertaste mentioned above.

All in all though, I'd still drink this over most lagers any day . . .
