On tap at Dockside Brewery, January 2010.

Appearance: Opaque, very red. Creamy white head leaving reasonable lace and a hint of foam.

Aroma: Red fruits, some malt, tart hop.

Taste: Gentle tart hop with plenty of malt, red fruit flavours such as strawberry and perhaps raspberry. Very soft bitterness and slight warmth. The unusual fruit flavours, malty backbone, and gentle tart hop balance perfectly in this beer. Very tasty.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied.

Drinkability: A very well made beer that is a pleasure to drink. Slightly higher abv than most of their other offerings.

I liked this a tad better than the brown lager but its not that dark. Lace, sweet, a modest amount of rum brown complexity in the first few sips - and a medium mouthfeel. Unoffensive but bland after all. Some Saaz hops, which merely became part of the carbonation.

Described as "Dark amber lager with mellow fruit flavours".

The brewer is from Germany, and there is a strong German influence... but the malt flavour isn't alone. It's certainly not as fruity as an ale, but there is certainly some depth to the flavours. I'm not sure if this is from higher fermentation temperatures (than whats typical for a lager), or if it's the use of North American hops?

Regardless, it is a fine beer.
