A: Great dark brown mahogany color. Mostly clear. Light biscuit foam. Low carbonation--could use a little more.
S: Oak. Wet leaves. Rich malt and caramel. Slightly sweet. Dry hops. Some alcohol.
T: Rich caramel malt flavor up front with a nuttiness of cashew and almond. that gets backed up with equally strong hops. The bottle claims 120ibu. Either it's not all the way there or it's nicely balanced with the malt as they kind of balance each other out. Strong alcohol finish. Also a little steel mineral nature in the aftertaste.
M: Big rich and heavy. A slow drinker. Long finish with the alcohol and fairly dry. In my opinion, this needed some more carbonation to cleanse the palate better at the end.
O: I'm not sure double ipa is accurate. I'd call it more of a barley wine since its so malty and big on alcohol. The hoppiness and the big maltiness are nicely balanced, albeit both very big.

22oz : Teku
Pours a dark, deep garnet with a thick, foamy, toffee colored head.
Big resiny, floral, citric hops, balanced with a strong caramel and toffee malt background.
The taste follows the nose with resiny, floral citrus hops followed quickly and balanced quite evenly with a big, caramel and toffee malt backbone.
Medium+ body, slightly sticky/resinous on the palate.
This was a tough one to grade for me, as the taste and nose were enjoyable, but did not strike me as what I would consider a DIPA as the brewers call it, but more of an American Barleywine.

Appearance- Pours a finger's worth of head that has little retention. The head is a light beige while the body is a dark amber with hints of maroon which glows a medium to dark amber when held up to the light. Maybe a spot of lacing.
Nose- Very interesting for a DIPA. Lots of caramel, so much so that it also suggests vanilla and toffee. A bit of change up as far as fruit esters go: cherry, peach, apricot, apple, and banana. Lots of honey with floral/nectar characteristics. Reminds me more of a barleywine rather than a DIPA. Small hints of orange and lemon and grapefruit. Some notes of butterscotch as well.
Taste- The presence of caramel extends itself to palate as do many other aspects of the nose. Vanilla, toffee, even small hints of coconut. Some pine and resin on the finish with a bit of orange, cherry, and lemon in between the malt bill and the finish. Honey with a bit of mustiness (grapefruit, spicy green fruit). A nice touch of spice in finish gives this a clean feel that contrasts the unusual dominance of the malt. Definitely an interesting take on the DIPA. Reminds me somewhat of 90 minute and 120 minute. Caramel is a little burnt at times and recalls smoke. Bitterness seems mellow for over 120 IBUs. Fairly solid with a bit of messiness but no real heat. Matchstick on the finish as well. I like the fact that they didn't just make another big and juicy West Coast DIPA (though I like those). With such a large malt bill, I could see this being a cellar beer.
Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with hints of syrup in the texture. Good level of carbonation.
Drinkability- Fairly easygoing. Not the biggest fan of malt dominated IPAs but this one works. The matchstick on the finish clashes a bit with it. Good price at 6 bucks a bomber.
Overall- Wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised. Will be a big disappointment to a hophead or someone wanting a juice bomb but it mostly works. Probably would repurchase as it is a pretty good bargain. Not outstanding but definitely worth giving a chance.
