From a 500 ml bottle (no date) into a nonic glass. Reviewed from notes dated April 24, 2016.

A-As a pale ale, this thing looks awful. But as a sour/aged effort, it is OK looking. It is hazy and light amber in color. The off-white head sticks around for quite a while and I can see some significant carbonation in the beer.

S-This is fully tart with cherries, vinegar, and lots of funky oak. There is some caramel sweetness in here too. Again, this beer fails as a pale ale, but it does a decent imitation of a flanders red or oud bruin.

T-The taste is really heavy on the wood with a funky vinegar acidity. Less fruit on the palate than on the nose, but there is still some tart grape and cherry to go with the vinegar. Malts are strange and do not integrate well with the acidity in the beer. There is a barley and caramel flavor that fees like it is sitting below the tart flavors on my tongue. A funky, sour finish caps things off.

M-The body is medium in heft and the carbonation is almost creamy.

O-This is an odd, odd beer. I don't think the mixture of styles works for me and the vinegar, and oak flavors are much too strong here to be fully enjoyable. That being said, I don't think this is a drain pour, just a little different. Kudos to experimentation, I guess.

This is completely underrated and wrongly panned. It's one of the most interesting sour beers I've encountered. The sour note in the nose is very assertive, yet the sour flavor is much more subdued, yielding to malt and hops flavors. It's a very "beer-like" sour, seemingly heavier in barley malt. rather than wheat malt. It's a great entry level sour, for people a bit shy of Gose, Berlinerweisse and Lambic. This beer is satisfying, complex, delicious and clean finishing. I wish that they didn't call it an "English Pale Ale", because after being aged in oak for a year, it's, happily, far from that!

500 ml bottle.

A: Pours a slightly hazy sunburst orange under a one-inch thick white head which fades slowly to a thin cap and leaves clumpy lace.

N: Woody, slightly sour like a flanders-style, yeast, malt. Not what I was expecting.

T: Oh this just gets worse. Unpleasant and harsh off-flavors somewhat synthetic stale fruit (grapes and apples) and oak.

M: Moderate body and medium carbonation. Dry and bitter sour finish.

O: Not an English Pale Ale. Not very drinkable. Not refreshing. Hard to finish.

Copper to amber in color; opaque; with moderate carbonation. Large 2 plus inch rich beige head when poured; dissipated soon while a layer of foam remaining on the surface of the beer and lacing remained on the sides of the glass. Kind of a sweet and sour aroma; cider-like; made me want to drink the beer. Taste starts off slightly apple-like but progresses quickly to a sour taste on the sides of your tongue and then has a dry, almost salty finish in your month. Left me feeling somewhat dehydrated; felt like I needed a glass of water after drinking this beer. It was not thirst quenching. Overall interesting. Seemed well crafted, though not something that I personally would want to drink again as I did not care for the finish.

A: The beer is hazy yellowish orange in color and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a thick collar consisting of large bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of oak and vanilla are present in the nose along with some hints of sour grapes.
T: The taste is dominated by flavors of oak from the barrel aging and also has associated notes of vanilla and hints of sourness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a little tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The label says that this beer is matured in oak barrels, but the subtle aromas and flavors of sourness were a pleasant surprise to this beer. I really enjoyed how this beer was very easy to drink yet also very complex.

Poured from bottle into tulip glass. Appearance is a clear amber, with creamy off-white head and lacing. Smell is woody, oak notes and white grapes- not unlike the bitterness of a dry white wine. Taste follows the smell; close in character to sour beers. For something titled "Pale Ale," there isn't a noticeable hop presence. Finishes clean, not too heavy. Light carbonation and medium-bodied. This is a decent springtime beer to have with a light meal. RIYL saisons, sour beers, etc. Not recommended if seeking out a “traditional” pale ale (of any style).

To mirror what another review has said, this is in no way, shape, or form an English Pale Ale. Unless, of course, they mean prior to barrel aging and souring. However, to be fair, it is pale in color and the label is written in English. As a sour, this is quite a nice brew. Zesty lemon citrus immediately up front, followed by some cherry and earthy funk notes. On the palate there is a nice tart sour note, not overwhelming, matched wonderfully with a touch of oak and some white wine grape tones. I'm not a huge sour power fan, but I do enjoy a well made and balanced sour, a category of which I believe this beer belongs.

Full disclosure: I got this beer on sale at a bottle clearance for $3.50 (which I am led to believe is pretty much a steal), without any knowledge of the beer itself other than it was "not quite a sour." Having not expected an English Pale, I feel I had a much different approach to tasting this.

this in on no counts an english pale ale. its a sour all the way though, bacterial ac can be on the nose, mineral heavy and malty, but still sour, grapey notes, and a weird finish with no hops at all. bright blonde color with a light amber tint and a small white head without much retention. either its an infected pale ale, or its a sour, hard to tell which. i get some oak in nose and taste, which suggests to me an intentional sour, but there is no hops to this at all, which also leads me down that road. definitely a weird brew, quite thin in body, with a certain must to the back end that reminds me of a condiment i had abroad and can't quite place. long metallic finish is unflattering, but the beer itself is pretty good. way overpriced, i wouldn't pay more than 8 bucks for a bottle of this, about half of what its on shelves for, but worth a try if you absolutely must have every sour beer that comes out, an increasing percentage of the population...

Recently stumbled across my notes from The Festival 2012. Lets do this!

A - Poured a slightly orange/brownish hue with a one finger off white head that fades at the usual pace. Solid.

S - Hmm...lots of nice barrel notes, some sour white grape notes, dont get much in the way of an english pale ale though.

T - Taste is more of the nose, white grape flesh and skins, oak barrels, tastes nothing like a pale ale, though it is quite pleasant.

M - Mouthfeel is incredibly thin and watery.

O - Overall, kinda weird here. If this was labeled a wild, I'd be all over it. But an English pale ale, I think not.
