Tasted on tap at the brewpub on 7/24/2009.

Vanilla Bean Porter is back after being gone for about a year. The brewer reports one change from the earlier version: he is now adding the vanilla beans directly to the brew, rather than using a bag. This method gives more direct exposure to the beans, which boosts the vanilla flavor.

Pours very dark, with a small tan head. Aroma reflects mostly roasted notes with some vanilla. Taste continues with the first impression, roast and vanilla. Good mouthfeel, perhaps a little thinner than optimum, but not bad. Nice, smooth finish.

A good vanilla porter, with significant improvement over the first effort from last year.

October, 2009 version. Tasted 10/17/09.

Vanilla liquorish, coffee bean syrup straight up. On tap for special event, 1 brew available. Poured no head but had mild lace, very dark, black through & through. Packed with flavor, delicious but strong.

ABV reported as a 9.25% by the owner.

Appearance: lovely, dark, almost black, thin tan head. Served too cold, the head retention and size could be better if all of their beer was served at a better temperature. It's not Bud Light, people, get a clue! I just don't know why a knowledgeable brewer does this!

Smell: wow! very roasted, hops take a back seat here. The vanilla is present in the nose.

Taste: This is where I find the vanilla lacking. I had to search for it. Maybe it was the temp of the beer? It just wasn't as vanilla laden as I would've preferred. But the roasted malts and hop balance were pleasant, nothing outstanding though.

Mouthfeel: just a tad watery for a porter, needs better body, but compared to the other tap offerings this is one of their better bodied beers.

Drinkability: Could knock back one or two, no more than that.
