750ml bottle, drunk straight from bottle I'm at a backpackers in tassie so no glasses to be had anywhere!.
L- from what I can see pouring a few ml into a lid, choc brown.
S-milk chocolate, peat, burnt sugar, roasted malt
T- sweet roasted malts, milk choc, with aniseed and plums towards the end.
M- moderate carbonation, a tad watery to begin with, then becomes earthy towards the finish. Light bodied for style.
O- more like a Porter, the spices (presumably aniseed) is light on.

Appearance- 3.5
Dark brown to black with a small beige head, average to poor retention.
Smell - 3.0
Dry, roasty and cocoa malt aroma.
Taste - 3.0
Same as the smell, but with added caramel and a little warming alcohol. Overly dry but improves with warmth. Some hops, but most bitterness seems to come from roasted malt.
Mouthfeel - 3.5
Medium bodied, moderately carbonated, becomes smoother and easier drinking with added degrees.
Overall - 3.5
A pleasant, if underwhelming beer. Very drinkable, but I don't really see this as being a winter warmer - it should be richer, sweeter and fuller bodied to deserve that title.

On tap at the Local Taphouse, Sydney.
Pours a very dark, almost opaque black-brown, even at the edges and when held to the light. Lacing is good but the head, such as it is, dissipates rather quickly. Body looks a little light, but although the head remains merely a film, it creates some quite intricate lace. Looks pretty good.
Nose is vinous but slightly spicy, dark chocolate and roasted grains. Like dark chocolate dipped shiraz grapes. It's not incredibly robust, but it's deep and very pleasant.
Taste has more bitter chocolate on it, with some slightly acidic characters which really cut back the body a lot. Bit of cherry and a slight astringency. Very dry finish. Chocolate comes through again on the back. Shame about the feel. It really needs a bit more.
I've had better beers, and better beers in this style. It does have that nice astringency, and a nice continuing afterpalate, but it is certainly missing something. Needs depth of palate, more body and more complexity.

750ml bottle
This pours a very dark brown/black with a very generous tan head. Looks good.
The nose isn't as expressive as I would hope. A bit of indeterminate spice and some sweet chocolate.
The chocolate and a bit of coffee on the palate.
Nice silky mouthfeel.
I didn't feel that this is an overly flavourful beer but I found it really easy and enjoyable to drink.

been hanging on to this about six months now and finally decided to take it for a test run. no best before date. 750ml bottle so it'll be good for home brew as well. bonus.
serious beer looks. black as stout with a good sized tanned head. stable with little lacing. pours thick and viscous too. impressive.
nice mix of star anise and cinnamon(?), maybe nutmeg. either way they combine really well here. of course the malt sweetness backs it all up nicely. some sort of sweet buttery, no, maybe caramel or butterscotch. something like that anyway. complex and appetizing yet restrained.
well, this just gets better. taste is nicely balanced and drinkable. spicy without being overly gimmicky and yet the impression i get is the base beer would be just as enjoyable without them. maybe missing a bit of complexity but certainly well made. hops stay in the background but to no detriment as the spice is there. the alcohol is well handled too.
smooth and silky. glad i left it for this long. should grab another bottle for next winter.
i usually dont go for bottles from this brewery as i can easily get some of their offerings on tap. after this though, i will look at them differently in the bottle shop. glad this is a 750 and my exam is over. night cap anyone?
