It was a great surprise to see Abadessa being sold at an amateur soccer field in São Leopoldo, RS. After sharing a liter of the Slava Pils, it was on to the dark side, a side which I haven't walked into regarding this brewery. Coming from a 500 ml bottle, on to the beer:
The beer is amber brown with orange hues. Solid head retention and a few strings of lace make a statement. Its aroma can compete with many of the fine dunkel lagers in production. I can smell cocoa, vanilla cookies, and orange. Such fun and games continues into the taste. At first, a note of yeast sets the tone for the beer, It's nutty, semi-sweet with the cocoa, and could expect this beer to be sweet, but the sweetness is kept in check. The beer also has a lighter medium body and is easy to drink, showing that the skills of Abadessa's brewmaster have not faded away since leaving Munich.
