i have not had them all, but i have had a fair few, and this one ranks among the best, and i dont mean among the best variants of this beer specifically, or even among the best that this epic brewery produces, but among the very best beers ever, like, that i have ever had, ever. the scotch is far from subtle, the barrel character is ripe and brutal and forward and angry in a good way, the base beer is its full glorious malty rich self, and this has all the features of something id punch my mother in the face for, if i were that kind of guy. the base beer is epic, no doubt, let us have it as it is sometime no? but the barrel treatment here is king of them all, smoked, peaty, raisin and rum driven, dark bread, birthday cake, cigarette before being lit, molasses, fig jam, old mans hat, pipe tobacco, winter fire, wool, so pure, such an emotion, insane. yeah its sweet and sure its alcoholic, but the scotch is so real here, vanilla and cola, smoke and coal, i taste this for literally ever. body to the max, wood dripping, sweet and rich but not foolish or diabetic, its everything in perfect proportion and this has to stand as one of the best beers ever, i swear. we tastes a whole heap in this session, but there is nothing like this, never will be. each variant has been absurd, but maybe this is the best ever, oh my god...

Woo, Lost Abbey. Pours dark brown, slight head. Smells whisky, malty, raisins. Smooth mouthfeel, definitely some boozyness. Rich and warming. Taste is plenty whisky, dried fruit, raisins and a good maltyness. Nothing special, but done extremely well.

375 mL bottle. Deep brown. Smells of chocolate, oak, scotch, and booze. Tastes of alcohol primarily. Scotch. Chocolate. Oak. Maybe oak more than chocolate. Very boozy. Low carbonation. Not as heavy or sweet as I expected, but slow to drink. It's ok.

Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque black in the glass with a thin brown head that dissipates to stray bubbles with slight lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, whiskey, dark stone fruit, dates and raisins; a hint of smoke I would have missed if I didn't know this was Scotch aged. Flavor is dark toasted malt with light char (but probably from the Scotch rather than malt), raisins, dry caramel, molasses, hints of plums and dates. Finishes a little hot with mild Scotch peatiness. Medium bodied with light creaminess. This is probably miscategorized here, it is well within the traditional American Strong Ale style with other barreled or blended, heavy malt ales. There is little American barleywine character and slight hopping. That said and placing it with the other Angel's Share offerings, it is a full bodied, malty strong ale with dark fruit and dark malt. The Scotch influence is present, but is subdued in the main taste, but does linger with peaty smokiness in the finish. It is nicely made and flavorful, as are all of this series. I would have liked a more robust Scotch smokiness, but maybe that would just be more icing for the cake. Warming and fine.

I have wanted to try an Angel Share beer from The Lost Abbey. I am excited to drink this behemoth of a beer. The beer is 50 degrees and served in a tulip glass. The beer created a two finger frothy and billowy medium tan head with fair retention. The head dissipated somewhat quickly because of the high alcohol content. The color of the beer is a deep brown that registers as SRM 34 on the chart. The beer is opaque. The beer has a beautiful appearance.

The aromas of the beer are wood, caramel, toffee, pine, peat, sea air, resin, medium roasted malts, molasses, raisins, oranges, malty sweetness, char, fire, stone fruit, and bready.

The flavors of the beer are Maillard reaction, smokiness, fire, char, toffee, scotch, peat, oranges, floral, molasses, bay leaves, raisins, malty sweetness, medium roasted malts, bready, stone fruit, peat, sea air, resin, wood, caramel, and pine.

The mouthfeel of the beer is chewy and dry.

The body of the beer is full, medium carbonation, and a full finish.

From the words of FFFJunkie, he said: "lights out". This beer is incredible. The scotch barrelage is just enough to impart a scotch flavor without taking over the barleywine. I love the harmony and the balance in the beer. I thought the beer was going to have some alcohol warming, but alas it did not. The beer is 14 percent and does not drink like it. Incredible beer and a must try.

$ 17.73 (Including shipping)/12.7 oz bottle ($ 1.40/oz) from Tavour, Seattle, WA. Reviewed 12/23/18.
Undated but 2018 vintage. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 50 degrees (per bottle instructions) in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 4.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque, some effervescence. When held to the light, slight penetration occurs around the rim.
Head – Average (Maximum three cm, aggressive center pour), brown, medium density, fizzy, short retention, diminishing to a zero to five mm partial ring fed by effervescence and a few small islands.
Lacing – None. As expected for a high alcohol barrel-aged brew.
First pour – Medium brown, murky.
Aroma – 4.25 – Initially a burst of dark fruits, primarily dates
Flavor – 4.5 – Begins with sweet brown sugar, molasses, and generic dark fruit, ends with just a hint of bitterness and smoke. No alcohol (14% ABV!!), no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.5 - Full, nearly syrupy, soft carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 4.25 – Rather than wax poetic about this delicious brew, I’ll just say that it’s one of the few in which flavor justifies the cost. A mild gastric warming does eventually appear.

Had on tap. This, like the bourbon version, melds well with the molasses, chocolate, barley, brown sugar, vanilla and raisin. However the scotch is not as complimentary as the bourbon was, jarring even. More smokey in the smell especially. Booze is more omnipresent, and powerful in the finish.

Angel's Share is always a hot commodity when it comes out but when its aged in Scotch barrels, Im extra excited about it. This beer is heavy, rich, boozy and warm. You'll want to sip this one. The scotch aging adds a very pleasant depth to the sweetness of the barleywine and although I wouldnt call this beer peaty, it does help tone down much of the sugar. Very good beer thats worth the $15 per 375ml price tag.
