Been on an classic American IPA kick (read: bitter hops and sweet malts), so a few new Lost Abbey beers to the Nashville market caught my eye. One was solid. This one was not.
16 oz can with what looks like a born on date of 3/31/2026 poured into a tulip.
Attractive amber-gold fluid (good start) with a chill haze and a brief finger of off-white head. Little head retention and just a few tiny patches of lacing down the glass. Swirling the glass brings back a minimal foam cap but little else.
Aroma in the glass is almost non-existant. I need to sniff the can to get any identifiable notes, and there I get medium malts, pine resin, a little citrus rind, and a dank earth characteristic. In the ballpark for a IIPA, but way too muted and quite malt-heavy. And there's a slight waft of an almost sourdough note, which is out of place.
A previous reviewer nailed it on the tasting notes: malts and bittering hops. Period. Very bitter, very grapefruit-forward, but in a harsh way. The malts are just malty, not flavorful and not providing enough balancing sweetness. And the combo comes together like an overdone rye IPA. There are hints of what you're looking for on certain sips. But for the most part it’s a touch unpleasant.
Feel is moderate-light for a IIPA, nice carbonation, nice coating quality.

Man it had been a hot minute since I had a Lost Abbey beer. Oh hey look, they can beers now! This might solve some of the flat abbey carbonation issues that they totally said didn't actually happen.
Anyhoo, pours a golden color with 1" white head into a Nevada Wolfpack pint glass. The aroma didn't come across all that hoppy. 2+ bittering hops, ok this checks out.
Taste brought pretty much just bittering hops (Centennial, Cascade, Columbus, Mosaic & Simcoe) to the fold. A heavier than expected malt presence relative to the somewhat innocuous appearance. Getting that bitter woody twang thang taking you down memory lame. Yeah, I spelled that right. I guess Lost Abbey needed to make a beer to help keep the lights on. Where many might perceive some fruity hop impact, all I get is bitter wood, bitter grapefruit. And you know, that is what those hops do, so can't say the execution is flawed or anything. Any use of Mosaic hops here is in a very low quantity it would seem based on the taste.

Clear darker shade of amber with plenty of foam in the St. Bernardus globe. Aromas of green melon and canned peaches. Sweet and fruity, but then resiny and going toward the bitter side. Flavors of mango, more sweet peaches, and bitter orange marmalade. This is quite a bombastic concoction. It'll put hair on your innards and tickle your spleen. From the 16 oz can purchased at Baron Market in San Diego. No apparent date.
