For the past two years The Lost Abbey has released a winter barrel aged blended strong ale. This amazing blend of beer has focused on a marriage between Bourbon Barrel Aged Serpents Stout and Brandy Barrel Aged Angel’s Share. We believe it’s one of the most amazing barrel releases we do each fall.

But in the spirit of old recordings and records I started thinking what would happen if we played this one in reverse? Would we hear the Demon himself on the record? So with that, we flipped the blend on its ears and spun it backwards. The result is a blend of Brandy Barrel Aged Serpent’s Stout and some Bourbon Barrel Aged Angel’s Share.

It’s still an epic struggle between good and evil, only this time we slowed it down and played it in reverse.

Here's an interesting double barrel blend. See, I thought with a play on an ACDC song, this was going to be a straightforward mundane rocker. Instead, they hit you with double barrel nuance. Gonna be a tough one to review.

An almost 100% black pour. Brown head, 1/5" and then it vanishes. The aroma wafts of booziness, the kick from the brandy is noticeable moreso than anywhere else. Hot mama this one has an alcohol sting to it. The blended backwards barrels of Serpent's Stout and Angel's Share (now with carbonation!) is interesting. A mixture of brandy, bourbon, oak, wine, red grape, leather, parking lot, earthen tree stump. Something seriously bitter pairing with the alcohol does make it a challenging drink fit for Chicago pours.

For me, I thought it would be an improvement if they chilled the booziness and dark fruit prune/raisin bitterness. Just not worth $15/375ml (that's at the brewery price), but if it were priced like a normal barrel aged beer, I might venture in again.

Consumed 10/17. Review from notes.

No head. Black color. Lots of brandy and dark fruits. Molasses and bourbon. Vanilla, chocolate, and oak. Strong, but smooth. Great blend.

375ml bottle into a matching teku appears black in color with a tan head thats quick to fade.

Strong aroma of coconut, chocolate, earth and oak blending to a slight fruity alcohol addition that is somewhat vinous.

The taste is layers of barrel character - caramel, molasses, vanilla, toasted coconut then chocolate, earth, raisons and booze.

This is medium in body with light carbonation. A rich and tasty sipper that I wish was in a larger format so that I could of had more than 1 glass.

Excited to try this beauty. Pours out completely pitch black. Smells a bit muted. Some chocolate, dark fruits, bourbon, oak and booze. The taste is a completely different story. Wow. Tastes like bourbon soaked raisons and cherries. Sweet oakiness on the backend. mouthfeel is nice and full. Probably the 2nd best in the track series, behind 8. Love LA!

375 ml bottle poured into tulips for bottle share. Black opaque body with no head and no lacing. Legs run down with each swirl. Aroma is woody and sweet with caramelized sugar, barrel char, brandy, dried dark fruits, and cocoa. Taste is like an aperitif - sherry and port with a touch of sweetness, some boozy spice and woody bitterness. On the low end of full body, thick, viscous and oily, but at once, creamy, peppery booze and the slightest lingering sweetness on the finish.

Thanks to rudzud for getting these, split with him.

No head, nice legs, pretty much pitch black color.

Nose big strong malts, syrupy sweet chewy dark malts, big fudgey cocoa, caramel candies, some sweet brandy like fruity booze, candy and barrel notes, mild nutty caramel candy like, and little fluffy nougat.

Taste brings sweet malts, syrupy dark strong malts and syrupy candy, toffee and nutty and plenty of caramel, little fluffy nougat, nice fudgey cocoa and dark malts, with vanilla barrel, plenty more fruity brandy. Syrupy candy, mixed everything strong and dark ale. Finish sweet syrupy, light booze, light cocoa, fudgey, candy bar, fruity brandy, toffee, etc.

Mouth is fuller bod, light booze on the back end, no carb though.

Overall really nice, great blend of strong ale and dark ale, nice brandy barrel, booze hidden fairly well, just lack of carbonation that's the only real downfall.

Split with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a very dark brown basically black with no head. Then again, it is a huge ABV and from lost abbey.

S - Aromas of raisins, big brandy and bourbon, dark fruits. Alcohol is hidden nicely, nose is full of malty goodness and barrel.

T - Taste is delicious brandy, softer bourbon, light chocolate, bold malts, good sweetness, nice fruits, really complex and really good barrels. Quite tasty with not much alcohol.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, nearly flat, though the alcohol is hidden well.

O - Overall this beer was really good, awesome barrel notes, just not much other than dark fruits and barrel booze. Still, delicious.
