Copenhagen 22/10 2018. 50 cl bottle from Ninkasira Bottle shop. Some kind of stylized bird in gold on the label.

Pours opaque dark brown - almost jet black - with medium-sized light beige head. Settles as 0,5 cm thick layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Moderate lacing.

Aroma is boozy, dark and sweet. Sweet fermented fruits, brown sugar, dark chocolate, cocoa, tobacco and alcohol. Not terrible strong but quite pleasant.

Soft carbonation. Soft, thick, creamy texture. Almost have to drag it out of the glass. A little sticky.

Flavor is heavy sweet. Followed by a medium coffee bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet but manages not to get cloying. Lingers for quite a while.

Very nice, very sweet and potent Baltic Porter.

Pours a dark cola brown color. Completely opaque, but pretty thin in appearance. Fizzy, tan colored head forms on the beer before fizzling away leaving no residual head. The aroma on this is delicious - noes of lager yeast, cocoa, dark bready malts, some light dark fruit notes and a subtle oakiness.

Taste follows the nose with notes of oak, roasted malts, cocoa, vanilla, light dark fruit notes, and some light earthy hops on the back end. There is a lovely depth to the flavors with the dry oak and roasted malts coming through first. Then as the flavors linger on the palate you get that cocoa, vanilla, and the dark fruit notes. The back end is more of those roasted malts with the earthy hops coming in as well. There is a moderate alcohol warming presence. Feel is light to medium - but for the style trends lighter. Fizzy carbonation. Very dry finish.

Overall this is a fantastic baltic porter. I am honestly really impressed, although I guess I should not since the base Baltic porter has a really good reputation.

One interesting final note - this bottle is probably a couple years old at this point. They actually have a guide on the back of the bottle for aging their beers - this has definitely taken on those dry and complex characteristics. If I ever see this one again, I will pick it up.

De Labirratorium. En copa de tulipa de Mahou Barrica. Jugando a FFX.

500mL bottle lot number 59/32/19/1 poured into a nonic pint glass at fridge temp 9% ABV. The beer pours dark brown with minimal highlights and light brown head. The head recedes to a pencil thin ring and small island. No lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring brown sugar, oak, leather and dark dried fruit. The taste is bittersweet coffee and oak with a dried fruit tangy note transitioning to a dry, earthy, moderately bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with just less than medium carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, good. I imagine this is pretty old, and while complex, I prefer the malt to be fresher and more up front.

Look: It pours dark brown with a tan head. Head retention is good.

Smell: It has strong toffee and nut aromas with very low caramel. The oak is noticeable in the background with very low levels of dark fruits.

Taste: The toffee and nuts are strongest in the flavor as with the aroma. There are some light background notes from the oak and very low levels of dark fruit. There is a very low level of roast in support.

Feel: It is full bodied with good alcohol warmth.

Overall, it is laden with complex flavors and aromas.

Browar Fortuna "Komes Baltic Porter - Oak Flakes"
500ml brown glass bottle, "LOT NUMBER 59/32/19/1"
$4.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a typical Baltic porter appearance with a brown black body that delivers just a glimmer of dark mahogany brown at the base of the glass. The head started as a massive cap of tan foam but it's settled down to a short cap of creamy goodness. The aroma is unusual. It does smell like wood, but it smells like what I tend to think of as dirty wood - don't ask me, I can't explain that, but it doesn't smell like I'd expect oak to smell. Beyond that it's nutty, softly roasty, chocolatey, and darkly fruity. On to the taste... the woodiness remains, and while not quite oaky, it's more pleasant than it appears in the nose. The dark fruit remains with a combination of black raisin and dried berries. There's a bit of chocolate to it, not really that much, and some nuttiness although that's appeared stronger in the nose. There's also some delicate floral character, and a flicker of black licorice in the finish. It's got a median to moderate bitterness but it remains really well balanced. It finishes mainly dry with some residual nuttiness, caramel, and cocoa powder lingering, followed by the licorice as they fade. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp-then-smooth. So, not having had a standard Komes Baltic Porter in some time I can't really make a comparison but I'm guessing that the oak flakes haven't really done a whole lot for it. It's still a good Baltic porter and I've enjoyed it quite a bit.

Pours opaque, dark brown in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is roasted malt, oak, and Bosco. Medium-heavy bodied, roasty, with low carbonation. Makes for a good oak aged Baltic Porter. Straightforward and tasty. Would get this one again.

16.9oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a dark brown; khaki head that falls leaving great bubbly retention and solid lacing. The aromas have lots of milk chocolate leading the way. Some caramel along with some mild hints of vanilla. Some dark fruit. There's a subtle bourbon aroma even though this isn't a barrel-aged beer. Malts are there. The flavors basically follow the nose for the most part. More chocolate. Some rubber giving it an odd aftertaste. Malts do their thing. Alcohol is well hidden. Mouthfeel is full-bodied with moderate to active carbonation. It's sharp, fluffy, smooth and dangerously drinkable.

This is a solid brew, but I'm personally not a fan of the finish and odd aftertaste. The craftsmanship is on point though. Not bad.

Pours into a stein a deep dark chocolate fudge color with a bit of reddish hue,a fluffy quick to fade mocha colored head atop.Dark raisin and licorice aromas show out the most with bitter chocolate and roast underneath.Licorice and bitter chocolate stand out most on the palate followed by an earthy lingering finish, not as sweet as many of the style but don't get alot of toasted French oak. It's a really nice BP,so close to being great, glad I tried it.

From the back label: "LOT NUMBER 59/32/19/1"

Appearance: The body is black and it has a short creamy-textured khaki head that fades out to a ring and a film.

Aroma: There is an interesting aroma that smells a bit like licorice root and prune with a light hint of cola. There is a touch of caramel on the nose.

Taste: There is a coffee-like liqueur flavor up front, followed by a light smokey middle. Towards the end it is a touch acrid with a medium carbon flavor. It finishes with a touch of prune flavor and some more carbon.

Mouthfeel: It feels a touch sweeter than average and possibly not completely attenuated. Otherwise it has a nice mild bitterness from the grain.

Overall: The back label states that this "is a bottom-fermented dark beer, that owes its complex and rich profile to roasted malts and French oak flakes." The oak is not perceivable but the beer itself is very good. It tastes like a well-made Baltic Porter. I would drink it again from time to time and I would recommend it with the caveat that the oak character is not represented well.

Pours a ruddy mahogany with 2+ fingers of mocha head, a little bit of chill-hazing. Minimal head retention & lacing

S: Figs, a little cocoa

T: Figs, cocoa, dryness up front. Some red wine notes mixes with figs, chocolate, a little bit of leafy hops & woody dryness once warm. Finishes dry with figs, dryness & a little chocolate. with just a little charred grain & roastyness

MF: Medium body, fairly restrained carbonation

Solid take on the style, ABV is well hidden
