Thanks to EinWeizenbitte for sending this one my way. I love interesting beers and this one definitely fits that category. Poured from a 33cl into my Sam Adams pint glass. Poured a hazy yellow amber color with a thin frothy white head covering the top of the beer. It had some very good head retention but didn't leave much for lacing.
Not knowing anything about this beer and not being able to read the French description on the bottle I went into it pretty blind. I had to take a double take after taking a first smell. Is that what I think it is? Smells like marijuana. I had to look at the other review and I'm glad they explained better what this was. I have to say the hemp really comes through in the nose. It smells like the stems of the hemp plant. It gives it an interesting herbal aroma. Along with the hemp I'm getting a fruity and spicy yeast flavor and some citrusy flavors as well. A little wheat comes through as well. It's almost like a wit beer, only with a strong herbal hemp flavor to it.
The taste has a strong hemp flavor to it as well. The flavor is a lot like you would get if you chewed on the stems of some hemp. Some citrus comes through helping the harsh herbal hemp flavor become a bit more drinkable. A little spice and yeast flavors come through, but the herbal hemp flavor really dominates the flavor profile.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied and carbonation is moderate. Drinkability is not that great. It has some interesting flavors but I don't think the hemp flavors are going to replace hop flavors anytime soon. While it was very cool and surprising to get these flavors in a beer, overall they were a little strong and herbal, especially in the finish. Really cool beer, but one was enough.

Beer bottle (33cl.), tasted in 2008.
There were a lot of hemp crop in the region of Grenoble, where is located the "Brasserie du Chardon". We made rope, yarn, clothing... "chènevière" was the place where we grew hemp.
In this beer, hemp replaces hops. About cereals, there are 35% wheat malt, which is not a white beer so far, and a little raw oats.
Appearance : yellow color, with white foam head (not persistent).
Smell : spicy
Taste and mouthfeel : little hopped, fruity taste comes from hemp.
Drinkability : a medium beer in the style herbed/spiced.
