Brown 500ml bottle conditioned beer, best before Aug 2011, reviewed late Apr 2011.
Poured into an Abbot Ale tankard: really dark brown, almost black, a tan blanket of foam sat on top.
The aroma was of chocolate, coffee and malty molasses.
Although the smell intimated the beer would be fairly sweet it was in fact dry. Although the taste was of dark chocolate it didn't feel sweet, in fact a mild bitterness seemed to be the over-riding flavour.
Well carbonated, most of the sediment stayed in the bottle, but some got into the glass, however because of the dark colour you'd never really notice.
Pleasant and easy to drink, recommended.

Dark brown pour with a sticky cream coloured head. Reasonably sweet flavour, as expected, tempered by some good roast coffee and cocoa before leading through to a drying finish. Unlike some milk stouts I've had the character is far more restrained, which I think holds it back from being either a spectacular success or failure. What this does do, however, is make this an eminently drinkable beer, and one that is easy to session considering its low alcohol content. The body is medium-light with low carbonation. It feels very much like a traditional rendition of the style and I could imagine Ena Sharples drinking this in the snug at the Rovers Return.
