Earth Bread + Brewery "Bonne Annee" Bière de Garde
on tap at the brewpub, 24 Jan 2015
Appearance: Deep gold body beneath a creamy white head. Very good head retention and lacing.
Aroma: Fruity with apple and light pear amidst malty sweetness that is grainy and just slightly toasty. As it warms some gentle spiciness becomes apparent.
Taste: The flavor follows the aroma with fruitiness threaded throughout the gently sweet and grainy malt, some grassy hops, and just a dusting of black pepper within its soft spiciness. A moderate bitterness balances it, and it finishes dry with some pepper and spice bite.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and crisp.
Overall: Quite a nice take on the blonde variation of the Bière de Garde style. It's got some finesse to it, perfectly balancing the malt and spice so that it's accessible, yet satisfying - neither overdone, nor underdone. I wouldn't mind seeing it return every year.
