Great name, not-so-great beer. Dark walnut brown in hue that was heavily accented by brick red. The lid was small and disappeared quickly, leaving minimal lace. The nose was seriously muted. It might have been a little malty, but was difficult to assess.
The flavor was unlike any English brown ale that I've had before. There was some 'brown' maltiness present, but the biggest contributor was hoppiness (not flavor, but bitterness). Maybe a small splash of coffee as well. The finish was even more bitter and was intensely dry. The mouthfeel was thin, bordering on watery.
The Unsinkable Molly Brown Ale doesn't know what it wants to be. It looks like a brown ale mixed 50:50 with a red ale, it tastes like a below average IPA mixed with a brown ale, and it has the body/mouthfeel of a dark lager. TUMBA is the current 'specialty brew' at the Des Moines location. That means that once it's gone, it's gone. That's more than fine with me.
