Orange Honey Wheat, 4.6% abv, on tap at Jefferson St. Brewing Company, as part of a tasting flight. This review is a few months old, but I'm just now catching up on my backlog from this particular period.

Appearance: A slightly hazed, fairly attractive (in terms of the hue) honey yellow, served with a small orange slice, unfortunately, which positively obliterated what seems to initially have been a quarter finger of fuzzy, dull white head, now only a thin ring. Faint, slow carbonation is the only other notable quality of this beer.

Aroma: Chalky, nutty yeastyness, faint pithy orange, and hollow malts. Blah.

Taste: Fruit loops! Bright, artificial orange smacks you in the face right off the bat, annoyingly so, and is accompanied by a few notes of honey sweetness, some faint wheat malts, and perhaps some distant crackery notes. Slight banana and apple esters round things out. Varied, but in an unpleasant way.

Mouthfeel: Overcarbonated, soda-like almost, with a moderately thick body, the end result of which is a fluffy, erratic mess.

Drinkability: This was a fairly foul beer. My least favorite of their selections on tap, I knew I likely wouldn't care for it (you can tell who the target audience is for this one), but I figured it was worth a shot anyway. If you're going to skip any one of Jefferson Street's offerings, this is the one to pass over.

Poured from Growler.... One day later into pint glass.

A: Hazy pale yellow, good fingers worth of head that settles to a nice ring. Good lacing from start to finish. Looks like a good wheat beer.

S: Toasty, little saltine cracker.... wheat malt, orange peel and a touch of coriander.

T: Looked good, smelt good.. Taste is letting me down... wheat malt upfront kind of light, mid palette hits you with a little cracker, light sweetness... finish is heavy on the orange peel.

M: Mid bodied and pretty chalky, carbonation is pretty low on this one.

D: Started pretty good but lost me with the taste. Not the best beer a JSB... Worth trying to get a sense of the different beers they have a JSB. The ABV makes it very session worthy, but I'd have to say this is pretty average at best.

On tap @ the Jefferson St. Brewing Company (Lynchburg, VA) on 2/6/10.

Pours a hazy gold, with a thin layer of bright-white head. This stays creamy around the edges, leaving a cascade of foamy lacing behind. The aroma smells of sweet wheat, honey, orange zest, some coriander, and a touch of floral character. This was overall fresh and pleasant in the nose.

The taste is crisp wheat, a splash of honey across the tongue, and a good bit of orange rind. A light tingle of hops and some coriander spice dry the back of this out fairly well. The mouthfeel is light bodied, with a prickly sharpness that keeps this lively in the mouth.

I found there to be a bit too much tanginess to this from the fruits and spice for my liking but this came off as a decent and easy drinking enough quaff.
