Served on-tap in a clear waisted glass at Fry Spring Station (Charlottesville, VA).
A: Deep brown-black with short beige, big-bubbled head with decent retention and a few sticky lace trails.
S: Roasted and sweet sugar malt with light earthy hops. Chocolate and mild coffee are minor contributors. A bigger aroma would do this beer some good.
T: Very sweet and chocolatey with nice roasted notes without acridness, fitting well with the style. Hops are very mild and earthy. Coffee floats in and flavors are a bit more pronounced with warming.
M: Thin for the style but a good, roasted malt aftertaste with a sweet caramelly note in the finish.
D: A pretty good stab at a sweet stout by Jefferson Street. More body (i.e. bigger malt additions) would really boost flavor, aroma, and feel and push this into a really nice local. As it stands, I like it but would choose other stouts from around the area ahead of this one.
