Having seen the tap-list on-line and the reviews on this site, seeing a big, bourbon-barrel stout on-tap here surprised me.
Black Thunda is served in a tulip. Its body is solid black and completely opaque. The head is dark brown, and the thin cap is made up of tightly packed, small bubbles. A few bits of lacing are left behind.
The aroma has chocolate, roasted malt, and a little bit of wood and booze.
My main complaint about most bourbon-barrel beers is that the bourbon is overwhelming, leading to a hot, boozy mess. Black Thunda does not come remotely close to falling into this category, as the barrl characteristics are very subtle. First, I notice a bunch of chocolate, which also constitutes the strongest flavor in this beer. Next comes a hint of vanilla, a bit of spicy oak, and just a touch of bournbon. Rasted malt follows, with a bit of sweetness and a fairly dry finish. No alcohol to speak of.
The body is full with a big feel to it.
I'm pretty impressed that this 12% monster doesn't even have any heat to it, especially considering that it spent time in a barrel. For once I would probably like a little bit more barrel flavors added, but this is a good beer just the way it is.
