Al's of Hampden / Pizza Boy Brewing "Park Pounder"
16 fl. oz. can coded "WITH LOVE, ALBERT 08.17.20 14:05", and sampled on 08/25/2020
$2.66 at the brewery
Look: It's a murky golden-tan beneath a finger's width of creamy white foam. Good head retention and lacing.
Smell: Yeasty, malty, and gently leafy and grassy.
Taste: It's got some grainy malt to it but it's not sweet; neither is it really bitter (keep in mind this isn't that big of an IPA at just 5.8% ABV). The yeastiness found in the aroma remains, as do the hops: leafy, grassy, piney, just a touch spicy, and mildly herbal. There's also a touch of fruitiness to it but I can't tell if that's from the hops or from fermentation esters. It's got a lot of flavor to it but it's not really that interesting, however I'm guessing that it might taste quite different if it had been filtered. What's there is nicely balanced.
Feel: Medium-light in body and quite smooth with lots of extra proteins and a moderate carbonation level.
Overall: While the hazy side of this beer is nice, lending a smooth and seemingly fuller mouthfeel due to all of the residual proteins, the yeast that's left behind can be a bit distracting. Secondly, seeing as it's a bit on the lighter side (5.8% ABV) it's clearly labeled as an IPA because of the hops (pale ales can range up to 6.2% ABV), and yet the aroma isn't really that bright. It's obviously named "Park Pounder" because of its strength, and it's a hazy twist on a "session IPA", but the hops don't really pop like they should. Still, it's decent enough.
