Podunk Oatmeal IPA

Had this beer on-tap at Naked City in a pint glass.

Appearance: cloudy orange hue with a thin layer of ivory foam. The orange is so bright and inviting, I forgive the lack of head.

Smell: bready and yeasty with a strong citrus hop character. I like it!

Taste: big citrus hops with a nice bready character. Bitterness is pretty high, but overall the flavor is quite smooth and refreshing.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a nice silky creaminess. Quite good for an IPA.

Overall: a really good, solid IPA. I'd be glad to quaff tons of this stuff.

On-tap, served in a pint glass.

Appearance- A light amber, orangish-gold hue and a thin white head. Nothing too special about the look. A little cloudy dullness in the color with light lacing throughout.

Aroma- Nice citrusy grapefruit. A really clean smelling beer, and the oatmeal is definitely present. Pale malts, steel cut oats and some dark bready characteristics.

Taste- Wow, oatmeal and dark grapefruit. This beer is tasty. Biscuity malts, bread, and a sweet bitterness on the tongue. Malts aren't very sweet and are sort of dry. Tastes a bit like a crunchy granola bar mixed with some great IPA citrus flavors and northwest hops.

Mouthfeel- Medium, sparkly carbonation and a great throat covering feel similar to when you eat oatmeal. Chewy, with nice body. Drinks a bit differently than your average IPA.

Overall- Pretty straightforward flavor profile for what's in it. Not much complexity or hidden qualities, and an overall great take on an IPA. Really difficult to describe this one. The dominant oatmeal texture and flavors, mixed with some hops and grapefruit make for a really excellent beer.

On tap at Naked City in Seattle, WA. August 27th, 2011.

A: The beer poured a pale golden orange color with a thin head of white foam. Medium lacing clung to the sides of the glass and remained throughout.

S: Very subdued aroma of citrus and pine is trying to shine through, but the dominant smells are of malted barley and oatmeal, as the name would suggest.

T: The initial flavor is that of oatmeal, almost like eating a salty cookie. Citrus fruits such as grapefruit and orange and lingering in the background with some malted barley. These typical IPA flavors are floating in the background to help bring some nice rounded elements to the beer, but it's the light oatmeal taste that shines through.

M: Pretty standard mouth feel, slightly heavy and oily, but nothing too different from a standard IPA. The low ABV is not noticeable whatsoever.

O: Huh. Never had an oatmeal IPA before. Just different enough from a standard IPA. This was recommended to me by the grandfather of one of the owners of Naked City. I'm glad I tried it.
