A:Poured a dark, lightly clouded like caramel color with some brown and red hues.
S: Toffee, caramel, a breath of Earthiness, wood with vanilla or perhaps that is coconut, either way its good.
T: The initial wave of flavor is toffee meet caramel with some raisins, figs sandwiched in the middle. A little bit of chocolate comes to mind as does some light boozey stinging notes. The finish is a bit long with moderate heat and sweetness
M: Medium to big bodied, well carbonated for the style. Sweetness, heat and dark fruits really coat the palate and provide a delicate yet decadent mouthfeel.
O: A very good example of a modern day English Bwine. The barrel influence was just right on this. I wish I could score more.

Had this on tap at BPP's Barley Wine Bacchanal when visiting friends in Seattle.
A:The color was darker than a typical english barleywine but definitely appropriate for style which with inherited stout-like properties - it reminded me of how Angels Share and King Henry looked dark but came through with more complexity.
A: Smelled caramel, hint of oak, coconut, and dark fruits.
F: Dark, sweet, hint of fruit hidden in between the layers of caramel and toffee.
M: The mouthfeel was slightly thinner than I'd like, but the layers of complexity more than made up for it. Slightly dry on the finish, it made it that much more drinkable and balanced because sometimes english barleywines are way too thick and sweet.
O: This beer is a wonderful example of what a barleywine can be. Naked City would do well to make this a yearly offering.

Had a draft of Old Proper at Naked City during their Washington Beer Open House Day.
This pours a dark brown amber color with a low carbed tan head. I get huge caramel, coconut and toffee aroma with a hint of booze. The flavor backs up the aroma with a sweet fruitiness in between the layers of caramel and nuts with a hint of roast. The blend really lends itself to a balanced wood character that plays with the other flavor components. The barrel character contributes a velvet-like coating in my mouth and there's a nice subtle dryness on the finish that makes me want to have more. For a 13.5% beer, this is very drinkable and the alcohol is well hidden by all the flavors going on.
It's a solid beer with signs of aged complexity for a young barleywine. Just imagine how it will come together in a year - while it's very very nice now, it should be fantastic then.
