The first new beer of 2015 is a smallish, one-off batch of around 50 barrels called “Flowerland”. You may have heard how difficult is has become for brewers to acquire some hops. There are many affects this has on a brewery: like waiting years to add a new beer to the repertoire, or replacing hard-to-get hops with cheaper and more widely-available varieties. Either way it makes for a frustrated brewer!
With Flowerland we took advantage of a rare correspondence – an email from someone selling their excess hops, in great shape and varieties interesting enough to build a beer around: Apollo, Rakau & Southern Cross.
Some of you may remember our other two double IPAs: “There’s No Place Like There” that we brewed with NAPAR of Spain and “Cutie Pie”. Well “Flowerland” is very different once again, nearly ruby in colour and sporting more caramel malt than you usually taste these days, it’s a bit of a throwback to the first big-bodied, hoppy, strong beers popping up in the USA 15 years or more ago. Look for citrus and pine, some almost Hallertau-like characteristics and maybe a bit of melon sitting atop and amongst a nutty, full-bodied, cherry-like malt base.

Poured from a 22 into a snifter
Look: translucent red, slightly on the dark side for an ipa. Poured with an inch of thick foamy head with slight lacing (3.5)
Aroma: slight alcohol, tropical fruit and floral. A lot of sweetness (3.25)
Taste: floral and tropical fruit up front. finishes quite sweet (3)
Feel: slightly syrupy, nice medium carbonation (3)
Overall: As a big fan of pretty things I have to say I've had better. Overly sweet for my taste. Lacks the hop character needed for some balance

22oz bottle. Poured out a slightly cloudy, golden orange color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled of citrus, floral notes and caramel. Bitter piney notes with lots of roasted malt. Oddly unbalanced.

Hazy copper color, nice head and lacing. Nose is sweet malt and come citrus. Mouthfeel is thick. Taste is malty sweetness, with some citrus and melon. Close to a double IPA in mouth feel and taste. Very enoyable beer.

A-2 fingers of dense off white, creamy head. Excellent lacing and good retention. Opaque orange marmalade body bordering on amber. Really nice looking dipa.
S-Orange, citrus peel, honey, some pine, slight booze and caramel.
T-Follows the nose with big caramel malt character, some orange and floral notes through out. Bitter citrus and pine in the finish. Big with a lot of depth.
M-Syrupy, slightly sticky. Medium carbonation.
O-Reminds me a lot of Kelso. Big malty, bitter, slightly boozy beer. Its not Trillium, but if your in the mood for sweet malts and intense bitterness this hits the spot.
