From a 600 mL bottle, thanks Jon,

A: Pours gold with a solid cap of white foam, good solid retention.

S: Cracked grain, bready notes, lemon, grass.

T: Again has that cracked grain with lemon character. Light hoppiness, but not exactly a full taste.

M: Light-bodied, crisp, biting carbonation, a nice attack.

O: From maybe the last place you'd expect to find a Kolsch, Brasil, this is a nice effort. Summertime beer for sure.

Intended for sale during the Carnaval season in Brazil, this Bamberg product was purchased at Cervejoteca and shared in California. Its label is distinguishable with a large crown above the name, and two smaller crowns on the sides of the label. Coming out of a 600 ml bottle, on to the beer:

A darker hue of yellow, topped off by a short lived head that leaves a few spots of lacing around the glass. The smell....ok, this is good. I've been having some diacetyl problems with some of the Brazilian beers I've been drinking in California (either bought by me or from visiting friends), and that problem is not present. Hay and fruity notes are there.

I'm surprised how vibrant the flavor is. I'm not a Kölsch lover by any stretch of the imagination, but I like the way this is. There is good Hallertau action throughout. Lots of hay and grassy flavor to go around, grapey notes, a touch of wood. It's light and crisp, clean, and very easy to drink.

Bamberg consistently makes good stuff, and the Kölsch is no different. It's miles better than Brazil's other kölsch I've tried (who remembers Eisenbahn Kölsch?), and certainly much better than what's in the hands of most people during Carnaval.
