I would have guesssed a heller bock based on it appearance. Clear golden color with fine carbonation and long lasting creamy head. Aroma is sour. Taste is tangy at first with lots of malt. My guess is that tanginess is what is bringing in the high ABV. I was hoping for better.

Martinator doppelbock, ode to Martin of Tours, 4th century Saint; nice label on the bottle.
Best before 05.19.2010, but I only discovered that when I opened it, unfortunately.
Colour is golden, thin head that disappears quickly, very modest carbonation. After 5 minutes, it looks flat in my glass. A bit disappointing to me; maybe it's because the sample is over date.
Smell is very pleasant though, with banana and malts, and some hops and pine.
Taste is similar, with pronounced hops as well, but somehow less fresh than the smell.
Very clean finish. A bit sweet, a bit dry as well. No real aftertaste at all.
All in all an ok hoppy doppelbock, but the alcohol is present, and it's not as complex as I had hoped.
I'd sure like to try a fresher sample some day. Very good chance it will be more to my liking.
